Wanderlust Down Under

For those who have never heard of Wanderlust, it's a four-day yoga festival that started in Squaw Valley in 2009. As someone who has frequented a number of music festivals and who also recently became a yoga teacher, I was thrilled to hear that Wanderlust was coming down under. I was fortunate enough to have met one of the directors when working at La De Da over New Year's, who informed me that he and his wife bought the license to take Wanderlust to Australia and New Zealand.

Given that it was it's first year, they started small. It was a one-day festival held in Auckland that brought together the incredible yoga community from the entire country. I did not pass up the opportunity to fly up to Auckland for an unbelievable day of yoga, music, and friends.

I started the morning off with an hour and a half of intense back-bending with Amy Ippoliti, which proved to be invigorating, playful, and downright delightful. She used me as a demo and helped me get into my very first King Pigeon pose! Amy was a brilliant teacher who teaches in an adorable down-to-earth style that really resonated with my learning style.

I then ran across the park to join in Duncan Peak's vinyasa practise for another hour and a half of intense and powerful flow. By the end of the practise, I was exhausted! Duncan is one of the founders of Power Living, a yoga enterprise in Australia that has trickled its way into New Zealand. I followed up his class by listening to him give a talk about his journey into yoga from troubled teen to disciplined military solider to successful yoga teacher and business owner. It was also fabulous to soak up the last rays of summer sunshine.

By the afternoon, all I wanted to do was relax and observe other people gallivanting around the event. I was, however, signed up for two more hour and a half classes and wanted to make the most of the day. I got to play around with some Acro Yoga (partner yoga) with Honza & Claudine Lafond, founders of Yoga Beyond in Sydney. I ran into some friends at this workshop and we got to make shapes with our bodies and I found a number of similarities to my cheerleading background (oh by the way, did you know I was once a cheerleader?). All in all, super fun!

I sat through the end of Dr Libby's talk about rushing women's syndrome (this Ted Talk is worth checking out!) and how women can optimise their wellbeing before heading back to the mat for my final class: yin yoga with Duncan Peak. It was inspiring to hear Duncan speak of his philosophy around the practise of yin and to hold postures for much longer than I'm used to (upwards of 5-6 minutes a pop!). It's an incredible experience to realise how the body affects the mind and vice versa when you're asked to stay still for that long in a challenging posture.

From there I made my way back to the airport and back to Wellington completely exhausted yet buzzing with inspiration and gratitude. The venue was amazing, the food was amazing, the music was amazing, and the atmosphere could not have been more amazing.

Next time, I will definitely need to pace myself bit better than I did this year but I couldn't help myself, I wanted to do it all--4 hour and a half classes in one day! There was so much to squeeze into one single day that I cannot wait until 2015 went it expands to four days and will be held in Taupo. It was unforgettable and truly memorable.

Kevin and I are off to Melbourne for a much-needed holiday on Friday. Have a Namas-day!

RYT

152 days. 5 long weekends. More than 90 personal classes. Over 260 training hours. Endless laughs and lasting memories. All this and I somehow found the time to hold down a full-time job...

It has taken a long time, but I can finally add a few extra letters behind my name after completing my 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training last Sunday. The journey has been beautiful and I'm not sure I can fully describe it. Instead, I'll show you.

On 30 January 2013 we entered with anxiety, curiosity, and excitement.

Below are snapshots of some of the activities, learnings, and adventures where we played, laughed, and grew.

These 17 beautiful fellow trainees (and two incredible instructors) became like family over the past five months. We shared many ups, each of us a few downs, and so much fun! I am confident that I have made some lifelong friends.

And then we came upon our graduation day. It was a lovely afternoon that showed us of the progress and transformations that had been made. The amount of knowledge acquired has been remarkable and I am so eager to share this with my future students.

I could not have done it without this guy. My rock. There were many nights of solo-dinners and waiting for me to come home from the studio. There were also a fair amount of guinea-pigging. I am so fortunate to have such a loving and supportive partner (and one who is pretty excited to be getting some free yoga classes at home).

While this training has come to an end, it is really only the beginning. I have been offered a part-time teaching position at the studio and am teaching my very first class in *gasp* an hour and a frickin' half (what am I doing blogging!?).

This really has been an experience of a lifetime and one that will keep me learning forever. Namaste.

Happy Birthday, Harry Potter, & Yogi-ing

Having moved away from home almost 7.5 years ago now, I have missed out on a lot of family affairs. And what I love more than anything is to celebrate birthdays with those I love. So it's killing me to be an absentee sister today for my baby sis turning the big TWO-ONE. Skype dates sure help, but it doesn't make up for the warm hugs and uncontrollable giggles that are evoked when the two of us get to spend time together. So here's to Emily, aka Amanda Bynes: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope you get spoiled rotten like you deserve and that you have a lovely, fun-filled year.

Remember when it was my birthday? Well Kevin had bought me tickets to go to Potted Potter,  a two-man show that plays out all seven Harry Potter books in 70 minutes. And although the show completely geared towards children (like really young ones), it was entirely adorable and amusing. Nothing gets me going like a few patronus charms and teenaged wizard angst.

In preparation for my teacher training in early 2013, I signed up for my yoga studio's 40 day yoga challenge. I am at the end of my fourth week feeling refreshed, strong, and a genuine dedication to my practice. 6:30 a.m. classes have dominated most of my weekday mornings--a great way to start the workday! Below are a few promotional photos taken in week two. Two more weeks to go!!

Mid-Year Check In

Welcome back little critters! Just a quick update so you don't think I've forgotten about you... Kevin and I have been in New Zealand for six whole months already! Can you believe it? Time has certainly flown by.

Winter is in full swing here in Wellington, full of blue skies and sunshine. After both suffering from an almost week-long cold virus, it's nice to feel healthy and be able to breathe through my nose again. So yesterday, Kevin took me out for a lovely and most delicious breakfast in at Scorch-O-Rama in Scorching Bay. I don't think I have ever eaten something so darn tasty. I ordered the cinnamon french toast with berry compote and "goop" (custard), and Kevin got the scorch-o-rama-lama-ding-dong. If the title doesn't give it away, it pretty much had every savoury breakfast food on one plate. With a fabulous view, there is really no better way to spend a Saturday morning.

We then spent the evening at the New Zealand International Film Festival where we saw a screening of Shut Up and Play the Hits, a documentary on the final days of LCD Soundsystem. If you have a chance, I highly recommend seeing this. I felt so nostalgic through the entire film and am grateful that Kevin and I were able to share their second last show in our 48-hour whirlwind trip to New York last March. Go see it!

Short and sweet, I know. But I have a lot of reading to do!
